Been hunting for one of these for over 2 years now. FINALLY found one locally, in reasonable shape, and for not a ton of money.

There is quite a few dents/creases to fix, but extremely little rust

I've been hoarding a dakota that is going to give up its frame/suspension for the cause.

Fantastic. Can't wait to see what you do with this.

I want to do the same, but I want 1953 5 window chevy/s10/5.3

Keeping the patina or going to do bodywork and paint?

If it had had the matching hood, I would have probably kept the patina look. It will most likely end up painted matte/semi-gloss.

Probably going to take more than a week on this one

Some more pics

I love the hood on this thing. You can open it from either side like this.

Seat has had better days. Floors feel solid.

No rust on the doors

The worst rust area. I'm assuming this sat in a field with the front slightly downhill and the bed filled with water.

A little more rust under the headlights. This area is completely open in the back so it gets fully abused by whatever comes off the tires.

Thats not a bad truck. I used to work at a restoration shop. Just be careful with what you buy. Work hard on your budget to get it as accurate as possible then double it. Seriously.

I bet LMC or somebody else has that bed panel. I know for the fords and chevy's you can pretty much buy the whole body.

Those doors look really good. They usually get a lot of rot because the water stays in there because drain holes are plugged. And the bottom part of a door is pretty complex.

Looks like a good solid resto-mod platform.

I like the dakota frame. Is there a kit to mount the body? Or do you have to fab it

I'll have to fab body mounts. No biggie. The IH fits the dakota frame very nice from what I've seen.

Not much out there for IH body parts. All the rubber bits and glass? Sure. Steel? Not so much. I have been looking at possibly using a ford/chevy front bed panel/tailgate. The IH gate is mangled pretty bad, but all the letting is straight, so can save them at least.

I can see how a budget gets shot to hell real quick. Lots of "ooooooo shiny" moments while looking at parts so far

This is an IH on a dakota frame. I really like the height this one is sitting at, I'll have to go back and see if he did any suspension mods or if this is just where it ended up after putting the body on.

Pulled the seat out and cleaned out a trash bags worth of dirt and shit out of it. Didn't find anything really interesting

Mastercrafts for shits and giggles. I like these seats (comfy) but I'm not sold on how they look in the truck. Plus they are a fixed back which is slightly annoying when trying access the area behind the seats.

Another consideration regarding seats is this truck has no seat belts at all. I'll be adding 3 point belts in one of two ways; A) add the upper attachment point to the B-pillar like a modern vehicle or B ) find seats that have the integrated seat belts.

Dog approved? He best not think that is a good place to sit after I put some paint on there (he jumped up there himself)

A bit early yet, but I snagged a new windshield off ebay. $300 shipped.

I'll need the rest of the glass eventually, but it is all flat glass so I don't believe it will become unavailable. It runs $300 shipped also for those 6 pieces.

Windshield arrived safe and sound. Was told I should inspect it before signing for it but fedex just dropped it off and ran. Fortunately I was home and caught him before he left and made him wait while I checked it out. No cracks, you can leave now. It came with a new seal too so that saved me $80.

The worst 2 parts of the body are the grill and tailgate. I'm thinking about just building a new tailgate since it is about as simple a body panel as you can get. Should be about $100 in material and it'll be 100% new.

I've started stripping down the dakota. I have the bed and front clip off now. Engine will come out next I suppose.
